I’ve been drawing my mandalas with Procreate, which was one of the first drawing apps I came across for the iPad. Guess I’ll add ‘kaleidoscope’ to my Etsy tags, lol. I saw a coloring book at the grocery store today titled ‘Kaleidoscope Coloring.’ It was a bunch of animals with zentangle doodles for coloring. It looks a lot like Amaziograph, with the options to do tessellations and such. After I’ve had a chance to play around in it, I’ll post something here. I haven’t purchased it yet, but I will in the next week or so. I do have my eye on another program I discovered the other day, called iOrnament. I’ll still use Amaziograph now and then, but it won’t be the go-to tool that I thought it would be when I got it. So for making my mandalas, I’m going to stick with Procreate. With Procreate, I can adjust the line smoothing to account for that – with Amaziograph, I can’t. And, unfortunately, the older I get, the worse the tremors get. That’s not Amaziograph’s fault – it’s mine, because I have shaky hands. It has a lot more options than Procreate in its radial symmetry, but I just can’t get over the shakiness of the lines.

I’ve had a lot of fun playing around with the Amaziograph app – especially since it’s made for making mandalas. Draw and learn, right? ? Abandoning Amaziograph Instead, you get this stark white on top of the layered gradient background.Īn interesting effect, but definitely something I need to keep in mind when I am creating the mandalas. Had I used the eraser to create the circles, the background color would show through them. You can see the same use of white in this mandala to create the circles. I used white to create them, so you can’t color them in digitally, because they are already white, even though it just looks like open space to color. Case in point – the circles on the inner layers of the above mandala. It’s a good exercise for me, so that I know when I create the next mandala what to do or avoid. For instance, the net sections I left white above, because coloring them in using Procreate isn’t as easy as dragging and dropping the color like I do with most sections. If I was just printing the mandalas out on paper and using colored pencils, they would all work.īut if I’m coloring them digitally (with Procreate or another app), sometimes how I’ve created the mandala causes issues when doing so.

It’s always interesting to me to start coloring them in and see what works and what doesn’t. I spent some time this week playing around in Procreate with some of my mandalas.
